Curral the Freiras - The Heart of Madeira

The small community of about 2,000 inhabitants was founded around 1560 by nuns who fled from pirates through a hidden path in the valley. The valley was formed by strong erosion between high mountains and provide protection, making an impressive holiday setting.


Each year on 1 November, the Chestnut Festival is held. From the fruits of the numerous chestnut trees, all sorts of dainties to include cakes, soups or liqueurs are made.
