1st place: Eiffel Tower - France
It has already conquered millions of hearts and is still considered the most iconic symbol of love in Europe: the Eiffel Tower.
It should therefore come as no surprise that the landmark of the"City of Love" is the most popular background motif for a marriage proposal with a total of 85,890 shared photos . The most popular photo spots with a view of the famous building include Trocadéro Square and the Pont Alexandre III bridge.
If you want a little more privacy for the big moment, you can find it on a walk along the Seine, in the Avenue de Camoëns or during a romantic dinner in one of the restaurants with a view of the Eiffel Tower.
2nd place: Santorini - Greece
Snow-white houses, the typical blue domes and the endless view over the deep blue Aegean Sea: Santorini is made for great emotions - and for the moment that changes everything. With a total of 81,720 shared photos, the Cyclades island takes second place in the ranking.
One of the Instagram community's favorites is a proposal in the villages of Oia and Fira against the dramatic backdrop of the caldera as the sun slowly sinks into the sea, revealing what is probably Greece's most famous sunset.
If you want to escape the mainstream, Pyrgos with its winding alleyways, the small church of Profitis Ilias or the white lighthouse of Cape Akrotiri offer more tranquillity and more room for romance.
3rd place: Lake Como - Italy
It doesn't always have to be the sea: Lake Como in northern Italy proves that a lake can also be the stage for the perfect marriage proposal, securing third place with an impressive 63,760 engagement posts.
The lake capital of Como itself boasts a romantic old town full of winding alleyways. But for many couples, the real magic lies in the smaller towns around the lake, above all Bellagio, the "Pearl of Lake Como", which provides the perfect backdrop for saying "I do" with its imposing villas and the best view of the sun setting over the lake.
4th place: Dolomites - Italy
With their wild natural landscape, dramatic cliffs and green alpine meadows, the Dolomites offer plenty of space for intimacy away from the hustle and bustle. As a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, the conditions here are ideal for elegantly turning a shared hobby into a marriage proposal.
There is no shortage of impressive backdrops: the turquoise-blue Lake Braies, Lake Sorapis, Lake Carezza and the vast landscapes of the Alpe di Siusi are particularly popular.
The Villnöss Valley with the small church of St. Johann in front of the striking Geisler mountains also often serves as a romantic stage for getting down on one knee. With 27,128 shared proposal photos, the Dolomites are in fourth place.
5th place: Big Ben - United Kingdom
The analysis shows: London can do romance. Three sights in the British capital make it into the top ten most popular backdrops for marriage proposals.
However, with 20,509 engagement photos shared, Big Ben is the undisputed favorite. As one of the most photographed landmarks in Europe, the British cultural icon adds an extra dose of history and symbolism to the big moment.
The question of all questions is particularly common on or next to Westminster Bridge with Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament as an unmistakable background panorama.
6th place: Tower Bridge - United Kingdom
With 17,437 Instagram posts, Tower Bridge is right behind Big Ben in sixth place. Some kneel down directly on the bridge itself with a panoramic view over the Thames.
Others prefer to keep it intimate and take a walk along the promenade to find a quiet spot with the famous bridge in the background.
And still others dare to propose on the glass skywalk 42 meters above the water. One thing is certain in any case: one look at the photo taken here will bring the moment back to life years later.
7th place: Trevi Fountain - Italy
Rome, also known as the eternal city, is the perfect place to proclaim eternal love. Although the Italian capital has no shortage of romantic backdrops, it is the Trevi Fountain in particular that has won over the most couples. This is proven by the total of 16,404 engagement photos on Instagram, which put it in seventh place .
However, with its baroque architecture and imposing statues, it is not only a feast for the eyes, there is also a very special tradition behind the fountain: according to legend, anyone who throws three coins into the water with their right hand over their left shoulder is sealing a marriage.
8th place: London Eye - United Kingdom
High above the rooftops of the British capital, the big moment is literally taken to a new level: On the London Eye, lovers can say "I do" at lofty heights on one of the highest Ferris wheels in the world while enjoying the view of the skyline.
But many couples also choose to propose in a quieter spot along the Thames with the London Eye as a backdrop, such as the South Bank, Jubilee Gardens or Victoria Embankment Gardens. With 15,527 engagement photos shared , the London Eye is in eighth place.
9th place: Palace of Versailles - France
Feeling like Prince Charming and a fairytale princess for once in your life - this dream can become reality with a proposal at the Palace of Versailles. And quite a few people are apparently pursuing this dream, because with 13,042 engagement photos published on Instagram, Versailles ranks ninth among the most popular marriage proposal spots.
As the palace is usually well attended, the extensive gardens are often used as the backdrop for the big moment. On 77 hectares, there are many quiet and romantic spots with a view of the palace or one of the artistically designed fountains where the engagement ring can be broken in peace and quiet.
Place 10: Sardinia - Italy
Gorgeous beaches, hidden bays, the deep blue sea and la dolce vita: Sardinia combines everything that many couples associate with romance. The island has already been hashtagged 11,591 times on Instagram with the theme of engagement.
With around 1,800 kilometers of coastline, Sardinia offers countless backdrops to put the icing on the cake with a proposal, whether over a glass of Sardinian wine on a terrace with a sea view, on a secluded beach or on a romantic boat trip at sunset.
The tenth place shows once again that a vacation together offers the ideal setting for many couples to take the next big step.

Methodology
SpaDreams conducted a comprehensive social media analysis for the rankings of the most popular spots for marriage proposals in Europe and Germany. The European ranking was based on a list of the most popular attractions in Europe , of which the top 100 were analyzed by search volume. To determine the popularity as a venue for engagements, SpaDreams specifically analyzed Instagram posts with the hashtags #engagement, #engaged, #proposal and #propose in combination with the respective English name of the attraction for each attraction. The evaluation was carried out using a so-called site query on Google, whereby the number of hits for the individual hashtags per attraction were added together and resulted in the respective total number of relevant posts. A total of over 600,000 hashtags were included in the European analysis.
Similarly, a list of the 70 most popular sights in Germany by search volume was used for the German ranking. For each attraction, Instagram posts with the hashtags #marriageproposal, #engagement and #engaged in combination with the respective name of the attraction were also analyzed using site queries on Google. Here, too, the number of hits for the individual hashtags per attraction were added together and added to the total number of relevant posts. Around 66,000 hashtags were included in the analysis for Germany.
Ambiguous hashtags and attractions that fall into the categories of theme parks, museums or memorials were not included. Sights in Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus were also excluded. The cut-off date for data collection was January 20, 2026.
