Thaulle Pure Ayurveda Resort in Detail

Your Ayurveda Resort

Nestled on the shores of Yoda Lake, not far from Yala National Park, Thaulle Pure Ayurveda Resort awaits you. 'Thaulle' means 'shore' in Sinhalese. This eco-design hotel, managed under German-speaking leadership, offers its guests authentic Ayurveda in a tranquil, secluded setting. The sustainable management of resources and food is also part of the hotel's philosophy and is honoured with the TourCert certificate. The Thaulle Eco Farm, spanning 25 hectares, is located about 8 minutes away. Here, you can plant your own tree, help with the harvest, or simply marvel at what the hotelier has created. The focus on ecological aspects is palpable throughout and makes the hotel truly unique. The private beach section with a pool at Kirinda Beach, offering picturesque views, walks, or water sports, is approximately 15 minutes away.

Sustainability

Thaulle is committed to these standards for the benefit of the environment and the well-being of its guests. Energy is largely generated from renewable sources through its own production of biogas and solar power. Vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices, as well as all flowers for decoration, are also grown on-site. To support the region, local employees and craftsmen are preferred, and local materials and products are used, which also means avoiding single-use items such as plastic bottles or imported products.

Kirinda Beach

About 15 minutes away, the bright sandy Kirinda Beach with a private section of the Thaulle Pure Ayurveda Resort offers scenic views of the horizon and the vast beach. Relax in the sublime Thaulle Infinity Pool or participate in yoga classes offered there. Those who are active will also enjoy swimming, surfing, or diving in the sea (seasonal).

Location & Surroundings

The small town of Tissamaharama, the former capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom of Ruhuna, is located just about 3 miles away. The pilgrimage town of Kataragama, home to significant Buddhist sanctuaries and temples, is approximately 15.5 miles away and, along with Yala National Park (about 8.7 miles), known for its large population of leopards, makes for an intriguing excursion destination.

Dining & Leisure

Enjoy Ayurvedic meals tailored to your dosha from the buffet while overlooking the lake. The restaurant spans two floors; breakfast and lunch are served upstairs, while dinner is enjoyed downstairs and in the garden by candlelight. Fruits, vegetables, and herbs are sourced from the resort's own garden or locally, in line with the Green Philosophy, and fish and seafood come from Yoda Lake or the local fish market. Vegetarian, lactose-free, or gluten-free dishes are available upon request. The resort also offers weekly Ayurvedic cooking demonstrations using produce from its own organic farm, allowing you to bring a touch of Ayurveda into your own cooking.

Ayurveda Center

"The best feeling one can have [after a Panchakarma therapy] is: feeling oneself," says Dr. Upul, head of the clinic at Thaulle Pure Ayurveda Resort with over 20 years of experience and one of the best Ayurveda doctors in Sri Lanka. Dr. Upul comes from an Ayurveda family and combines traditional Ayurvedic medicine with his own developed treatment methods, also for more profound complaints and chronic diseases.

The personalized Ayurveda (Panchakarma) therapies are conducted under the supervision of the renowned chief physician with a professional team of therapists. The 6 therapy rooms are uniformly equipped with shower/WC/herbal bath, inhalation, and massage table, and are only left for treatments in the Ayurvedic steam baths. Thaulle has an Ayurveda pharmacy with certified Ayurveda medicines and a separate garden area for resting by the lake after treatments. Most of the medicinal herbs and plants used are grown here. Acupuncture available on request (for a fee). English-speaking care is available, Western doctor on call. Feel free to read a detailed interview with Dr. Upul in the PDF shown below.

Yoga

Daily yoga (mainly Hatha, also Karma, Bhakti, and Raja) takes place in the yoga hall on the top floor with panoramic views.

Thaulle Indications

In addition to the desire for detoxification, cleansing, and stress reduction, the center also addresses more profound complaints and chronic diseases. These include allergies of all kinds, bronchitis, arthritis, digestive system diseases, high blood pressure, joint pain.

Free Time

Relax by the spacious lakeside outdoor pool or in one of the many secluded spots in the garden. Active guests can use the fitness area with bicycles, treadmills, and rowing machines, or enjoy a guided tour through the fruit, vegetable, and herb garden.

Bicycle rental included, for example, for trips to the private section at Kirinda Beach with a new pool right by the sea (shuttle on request, approx. €4, payable locally). The beach is also ideal for diving (see video below). Traditional markets about 6 km away, highly recommended e.g., the bustling market in Tissa. The hotel also offers excursions, e.g., to Tissamaharama with Tissa Wewa Lake, safaris in Yala National Park (about 14 km), to Sithulpawwa Rock Temple, to Kataragama and much more (for a fee).

As I booked and started my vacation at very short notice, I would like to take this opportunity to emphasize the flexibility and good advice of the SpaDreams team. I arrived safely and without complications at the airport and after another 4-hour drive with a pleasant driver (Silva), I received a very friendly welcome early in the morning at the Thaulle hotel in Tissa. However, the room shown and booked (SGL=DBL Superior) did not meet my expectations (almost directly above the kitchen, view of the lake with an aging awning "hung up". I was immediately offered two more rooms, so in the end I was very happy with the move to the Junior Suite (for a corresponding surcharge). Unfortunately, no one can be held responsible for the weather; it felt like it was raining from the moment I arrived until I left. This was not to be expected and did not make the vacation really relaxing for me during the time I was there. The always friendly service staff in the beautiful dining area with a view of the lake, as well as at reception, should be emphasized at the Hotel Thaulle. Every request was dealt with immediately and in a friendly manner. The Ayurveda treatments were a real treat, thanks to the masseur Cayan. This masseur is courteous, friendly and proactive. In my opinion, the other male staff still need to practise:-) There were a total of 3 consultations with the doctor, unfortunately very short in time, and questions and sensitivities were not really addressed, as the conversation was usually over after 10 minutes. Although I am largely fluent in English, there was no "flow" of conversation, which I very much regretted, as I perceive Dr. Ulup to be very competent and experienced. I got to know the guest-doctor relationship differently during my first stay. The "flower bath" is a wonderful end to the healing therapy. I must not forget to mention the performance of the kitchen staff. The New Year's Eve buffet was terrific, and the dishes served during the healing therapy were also very tasty, lovingly prepared and a delight for my palate. This was my second Ayurveda retreat in Sri Lanka, and I'm sure there will be a third, as the effects are always lasting! However, I will then consider booking a more spacious resort right by the sea.
