Round trip through India

By far the most famous sight in India is definitely the Taj Mahal. The mausoleum in the city of Agra was built between 1631 and 1648 and should not be missed on any travel itinerary to India. The building, which is mainly made of white marble, is particularly famous for its harmonious proportions. The Taj Mahal has been aUNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 and attracts 8 million visitors every year.

If you prefer rugged nature to culture, a trip to the Thar Desert is just the thing for you. The sandy desert is located in the state of Rajasthan in the northwest of the country and covers an area of around 273,000 km². Visitors can explore the desert on a camel ride far away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities and spend the night outdoors under a starry sky.

In the south of India, in the state of Kerala, lie the backwaters, an extensive network of waterways consisting of several lakes, rivers and canals. A boat trip lasting several hours will give you an impression of the vegetation of the waters and life in this area. If you wish, you can also hire houseboats in some villages and explore the river landscape on your own.

Like the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort is also located in Agra and is the second most important sight in the city. Construction of the building began in 1565 under Akbar the Great. He planned to move the capital of India from Delhi to Agra. The fort is surrounded by a 21-meter-high wall made of bricks and red sandstone slabs. The building is only 2 km away from the Taj Mahal, so a visit to both monuments can be wonderfully combined.

Rashtrapati Bhawan is the official residence of the President of India in New Delhi. The building, in which 340 rooms are spread over 4 floors, is located to the west of India Gate. The residence was built between 1912 and 1929 and combines both historic Mughal and modern European styles.

In the north of India lies the Himalayas, the highest mountain range in the world. The majestic mountains and snow-capped peaks should be seen at least once in a lifetime. The mountains are a must for daring hikers who are particularly keen to get in touch with the local population. Far away from civilization, you can visit Buddhist temples and historic railroad installations.

The Nilgiri Mountains are a mountain range located in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in southern India. Although this mountain range is nowhere near as impressive or famous as the Himalayas, it offers no less interesting sights. Visitors can enjoy a traditional Nilgiri tea or explore the area on a ride on the historic Nilgiri Blue Mountain Railway.

The Mudumalai National Park, which is divided into five zones, is located in the northwest of the Nilgiri Mountains. The 6000 km² park is home to numerous endangered animal species such as the Indian elephant, the Bengal tiger and the Indian leopard. Many rare bird species such as the Bengal vulture and the Indian vulture can also be seen here.

Periyar National Park is a tiger reserve located in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The reserve covers around 925 km² and is mostly covered by untouched tropical rainforest with trees up to 50 meters high. The park is home to numerous animal species such as the Bengal tiger, numerous elephants, the king cobra and a variety of bird species.
