Parakrama Samudra is an artificial lake on the eastern shore of which the old royal city of Polonnaruwa is located. It was created to supply the surrounding rice fields. There are five separate wewas (reservoirs), which are connected by canals. Parakrama Samudra was built by King Parakramabahu I, who ruled there from 1153 AD to 1153 AD.
