The aim of the study was to investigate the efficacy of curcumin as a maintenance therapy in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC).
89 patients with quiescent UC were included in a randomized double-blind study, with half receiving curcumin and half receiving a placebo in addition to standard medication for six months.
The results showed that the curcumin group had a significantly lower relapse rate (4.65% versus 20.51%) and improvements in clinical and endoscopic indices compared to the placebo group. A 6-month follow-up showed that the benefits for the curcumin group persisted.
The study suggests that curcumin may be a promising and safe option for maintaining remission in UC patients, although further research is needed to confirm these results.
