Curcumin, which is extracted from the rhizome of Curcuma longa L., has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine and has various pharmacological properties, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, antimicrobial and anti-cancer effects. It has a long history of use in the treatment of liver disease, rheumatic diseases, diabetes, atherosclerosis, infectious diseases and cancer. The mechanisms of curcumin's effects on oxidative stress, angiogenesis and inflammatory processes suggest its potential to inhibit pathological conditions and restore homeostasis.
This review presents the efficacy of curcumin in major eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataract, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, corneal neovascularization, corneal wound healing, dry eye, conjunctivitis, pterygium and anterior uveitis.
Clinical and preclinical studies support the use of curcumin as a therapeutic agent for various eye diseases.
