50 patients with knee osteoarthritis volunteered to take part in the study to investigate the effect of a gel made from Lake Urmia mud. The patients were divided into two groups: One group was treated with the gel, the control group received a placebo.
The three parameters pain sensation, morning joint stiffness and general functionality of the joint were measured and evaluated using VAS and WOMAC before and after treatment. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) was measured using blood samples.
Significant improvements were observed in all three parameters in the treatment group. TNF levels fell by 19.41% in the treatment group (control group: 1.76%)
It can be concluded from this that therapy with gel from the Urmia mud is an effective treatment for knee osteoarthritis. It would be useful to conduct further studies to measure the synergistic effects of combined therapy (pharmacological and mud).
