Nerve growth factor (NGF) levels and balance are reduced in patients with diabetic neuropathy (DN). This study from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad investigated the effects of hydrotherapy and massage on NGF, balance and glycemic markers in middle-aged DN patients.
Patients were randomly divided into four groups: Aquatic exercise (AÜ), AÜ + massage (AM), massage (M) or control group (C). Participants in the AÜ and AM groups performed exercises three times a week. The participants in the AM and M groups received massages during the same period. Glycemic markers, NWF and balance were assessed before and after the interventions.
NWF, glycemic markers and dynamic balance improved in the AT, AM and M groups. However, the increase was significantly greater after the AM intervention than in the other groups.
Acombination of hydrotherapy and massage increased NWF levels, improved balance and optimized the glycemic profile compared to hydrotherapy or massage alone.
