The open, randomized clinical trial addressed the question of whether balneotherapy (BT) is suitable for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) in children and compared it with treatment with topical corticosteroids (TCS).
The study was conducted at Conano Terme in Trentino and included a sample of 104 children (one to fourteen years old) with mild to moderate AD. They received either BT or TCS daily for two weeks . SCORAD (SCORing Atopic Dermatitis), IGA (Investigator's Global Assessment), CDLQI (Children's Dermatology Life Quality Index) and FDIQ (Family Dermatitis Impact Questionnaire) were used to assess disease severity and quality of life.
The researchers found that in the second week all parameters improved in both groups and in the fourth month the number and duration of relapses were lower in the BT group compared to the TCS group.
BT appears to have a beneficial effect on AD therapy in children.
