A blind study by the Optimed Medical Center in Turkey looked at whether mud packs and water bath treatments have an impact on the short- and long-term treatment of fibromyalgia when they are used as a supplement to pure education about the disease.
The sample consisted of 70 women with fibromyalgia syndrome who were divided into a balneotherapy group and a control group. All subjects received education about fibromyalgia syndrome, the balneotherapy group additionally participated in a program of water baths and mud pack treatment. FIQ, BDI and the individual assessments of the test subjects and the doctor were examined.
There was no apparent difference in the BDI value, but the results of the balneotherapy group were significantly better than those of the control group in terms of the assessment and FIQ value . The study thus demonstrates a positive effect of balneotherapy as a supportive treatment for fibromyalgia patients.
