The University of Brescia, Italy, commissioned a study on the effects of sulphurous thermal water. Numerous chronic diseases and acute recurrent infections are treated with it.
The present study uses the sulphur-based compound sodium hydrogen sulphide (NaSH) and thermal water characterized by additional ions such as sodium chloride, bromine and iodine (STW) to investigate the release of cytokines and the activity of antioxidants. The sample consisted of 50 people with respiratory diseases whose saliva and monocytes were analyzed.
The study showed that NaSH blocks the induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines and balances the formation of ROS. STW in turn increases the release of IL-10, an anti-inflammatory cytokine.
The study thus proves that NaSH and STW are suitable fortreating chronic inflammatory and age-related conditions due to their combined anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties .
