The Indian root Salacia reticulata, rich in alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, is used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat metabolic disorders. Vitamin D₃ is also used to treat certain metabolic disorders. The aim of the study led by Michael Ofner was to investigate the potential effect of this combination on obesity in humans.
In a randomized open study, 40 healthy, physically active participants aged 30-60 years with a BMI of 25-45 were examined. They were randomly assigned to two groups. Group A receiveda lifestyle and fitness recommendationfor 4 weeks ; group B receivedthe same recommendation and additionally took a capsule containing 200 mg Salacia reticulata and 1.6 µg (64 IU) vitamin D₃ three times a day with meals. Weight, BMI and body composition were measured.
After 4 weeks, there were significant differences between the groups: A significant reduction in weight and body fat was observed within 4 weeks. Group A lost 1.8 kg or 2.1 %, group B lost 5.3 kg or 6.1 %, therefore a BMI reduction was achieved. While group A lost 1.4 % body fat, group B reduced it by 4.5 %. Consequently, a significantly greater reduction in BMI and body fat was observed in group B.
The combination of Salacia reticulata and vitamin D₃ could provide effective support in the treatment of overweight and obesity - especially in conjunction with lifestyle modification. Further studies are needed to investigate the exact mechanisms of action and metabolic pathways.
