Study on yoga for metabolic syndrome

    Yoga

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong investigated the effects of one year of yoga on cardiovascular risk factors, including obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia in adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS ) of at least middle age. A sample of 182 adults with MetS was randomly divided into a yoga group and a control group according to the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program.

Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference, fasting blood glucose, triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations were measured at baseline, mid-term and at the end of the study. After one year of yoga therapy, the researchers found a reduction in the components associated with MetS.

The results suggest an improvement in cardiovascular risk factors through yoga for adults with MetS and suggest a complementary role for yoga in the treatment of MetS.
