Nutritional iron deficiency is one of the most common causes of anemia (anemia, red blood cell deficiency) in India. Since nutritional iron deficiency is usually compensated for with allopathic (conventional) iron preparations, which are, however, associated with side effects, the aim of this study was to investigate which Ayurvedic medicines on a herbal-mineral basis can be used to remedy nutritional iron deficiency.
The Ayurvedic remedy Trikatrayadi Lauha was to be tested for its efficacy and safety in relation to children with nutritional iron deficiency. 123 children participated in the clinical trial for 10 weeks. They were examined before, during and after the trial.
The results showed that Trikatrayadi Lauha had already significantly increased the haemoglobin values (proportion of red blood cells) after 5 weeks; after 10 weeks these values had almost doubled again. No side effects were observed.
