Functional constipation is a common problem and the efficacy and safety of available treatment options are limited. This open-label clinical trial investigated the efficacy and safety of an Ayurvedic polyherbal formulation, "TLPL/AY/01/2008", in 34 patients with functional constipation. The formulation contains isabgol husk, senna extract and triphala extract. The results showed a significant increase in the average weekly bowel movement, a reduction in the time spent on the toilet for defecation and an improvement in the stool form score. Other symptoms associated with constipation also improved significantly. The formula was well tolerated by all participants. The study suggests that TLPL/AY/01/2008 is an effective, safe and non-habit-forming herbal laxative for the treatment of constipation , but further comparative studies with larger samples are needed to confirm these results.
