The cartilage enables the joints to move without friction. In knee osteoarthritis, however, this cartilage can no longer withstand everyday movements, diminishes and causes severe pain due to bone-on-bone friction.
Ten experts from India studied Ayurvedic treatment for patients with knee osteoarthritis. A total of 245 patients took part and were divided into seven groups of 35 people each. They were treated for 16 weeks with different Ayurvedic preparations, all of which contained Zingiber officinale and Tinospora cordifoli and four other plant extracts; one group received a placebo, another group was treated with glucosamine. The aim of the study was to determine whether and which Ayurvedic medication would achieve the best results.
Group C, which was treated with a special formulation of Ayurvedic plant extracts, showed the best effects in the end, as the patients experienced the greatest reduction in pain.
