The aim of the 14-day study was to test the effect of Neydharting mud therapy on knee osteoarthritis on the basis of clinical parameters on the one hand and the patients' quality of life on the other. A total of 53 patients were divided into two groups; the first group received the mud packs, the second group the usual hot packs. The test parameters were recorded before and after the treatment as well as 6 and 12 weeks later.
In both groups, the quality of life had improved after 2 weeks and improvements were also observed in the subsequent period. Although the administration of painkillers was reduced in both groups, the difference was only significant in the group treated with mud. This trend in group 1 continued in the subsequent period. In the control group (hot packs) there were only temporary and insignificant improvements.
The Neydharting mud packs had a favorable effect on the clinical parameters, on the quality of life and on the medication required.
