Diet, Fasting & Detox
This study compared the efficacy and safety of fasting followed by lifestyle modification with lifestyle modification alone in patients with metabolic syndrome. The study involved 145 people whose results were assessed after 1, 12 and 24 weeks.
While there were no significant differences in co-primary outcomes at week 12, fasting resulted in significant reductions in several parameters, including HOMA index, blood pressure, BMI, weight, waist circumference, glucose, insulin, HbA1c, triglycerides, IL-6 and 10-year risk of acute coronary events compared to lifestyle modification alone at week 1.
Fasting also increased uric acid levels and slightly reduced eGRF. At week 24, significant group differences were found in weight, BMI, glucose, HDL and CRP. No serious adverse events occurred.
Fasting showed short-term benefits and may be considered as a lifestyle modification treatment in individuals with metabolic syndrome.
