The study investigated the effects of prolonged modified fasting on pain and functional parameters in patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis.
They conducted an observational study of 125 patients who underwent fasting as part of a treatment program between February 2018 and December 2020. The fasting period lasted about 7.7 days, with a daily calorie intake of <600 kcal.
The results showed improvements in pain relief, overall symptoms, quality of life, anxiety, depression, body weight and blood pressure. The study suggests that prolonged fasting as part of a multimodal integrative treatment can help patients with osteoarthritis to improve their quality of life and reduce their pain .
