Other fasting
The study investigates the effects of fasting and subsequent rebuilding on cardiometabolic risk, which is increased by the Western diet.
A substudy of NCT02099968 shows that in hypertensive patients with metabolic syndrome, a 5-day fast followed by a modified Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet reduces systolic blood pressure, the need for antihypertensive medication and body mass index after three months compared to a modified DASH diet alone. Fasting alters the gut microbiome and affects bacterial taxa and gene modules associated with short-chain fatty acid production. In addition, certain immune cells correlate with systolic blood pressure and body mass index. Machine analysis allows the prediction of a sustained systolic blood pressure response within the fasting group.
The high-resolution multi-omics data emphasize fasting as a promising non-pharmacological intervention for the treatment of hypertension in patients with metabolic syndrome.
