Ayurveda: Panchakarma
Based on a 5-day Ayurvedic cleansing program (Panchakarma), in which 20 test subjects participated, this study dealt with the question of the extent to which psychosocial factors affect behavioral changes on the one hand and the improvement of general health (salutogenesis) on the other. Expectations associated with Panchakarma treatment were examined, in particular quality of life, psychosocial effects and changes in behavior. Corresponding measurements were recorded before and after the program and again three months later .
As a result, the program did not change the quality of life as such. However, there were clear changes in the increased self-efficacy to use Ayurveda to stay healthy and in an overall more health-conscious behavior. In addition, the test subjects felt more supported by their environment in their everyday lives and depressive moods had decreased.
The results of the study suggest that the very complex treatment of Panchakarma can have a supportive effect in bringing about and establishing desired new and healthier behaviors.
