Buchinger fasting
Overweight / obesity
Jochen Steiniger and several colleagues researched the effect of fasting according to Buchinger and endurance training on energy metabolism and physical fitness.
Overweight test subjects underwent a 28-day therapeutic fasting therapy according to Buchinger and energy, carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism were analyzed with and without additional endurance training. The aim was to find out whether fasting according to Buchinger is associated with a critical protein loss and whether this is exacerbated by endurance training.
The data showed that the total protein loss during fasting according to Buchinger over 28 days was around 1000 g in the male test subjects. Additional endurance training resulted in an additional protein loss of 130 g over 28 days (p<0.01), improved fat utilization and increased physical performance.
The researchers concluded that endurance training is a safe and necessary component of fasting according to Buchinger therapy.
