1st day: NEGOMBO

☀ Greeting and pick up from the airport in Negombo (approx. 40 kilometers north of the capital Colombo) and transfer to the hotel. Afternoon sightseeing of the then Dutch garrison town founded in 1672 with the remains of the famous fort complex. In the evening you will have the opportunity to enjoy a drink in one of the numerous beach restaurants at sunset by the sea. Overnight stay in Negombo. (no board)

2nd day: NEGOMBO - ANURADHAPURA

(approx. 170 km, approx. 4 hours)

In the morning start for the drive to Anuradhapura, the old royal city of Ceylon from the 4th century BC. The city was religious and political center of the country until approx. the year 1000 A.D. The remains and ruins of the palaces, monasteries and monuments of that time as well as the Dagobas of the old Anuradhapura you will visit today. Not to forget, of course, the world famous "Bodhi tree", a poplar fig, which, according to legend, is said to have arisen about 2300 years ago from a branch of that tree in Bodhgaya, India, under which Buddha found his enlightenment. Afterwards or the next morning you will visit one of the oldest Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka: Mihintale, located approx. seven kilometers outside the city on Mount Mahinda, the origin of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Witness to this period is a dagoba dating back to the 2nd century B.C. Overnight in Anuradhapura. (Meals: breakfast, dinner)

3rd day: ANURADHAPURA - SIGIRIYA

(approx. 75 km, approx. 1.5 hours)

Drive to Sigiriya. Shortly before arrival, visit the rock caves of Dambulla, which can be reached at approx. 160 m by an easy climb. There are countless Buddhist murals, sculptures and statues in this former retreat of King Walagama. In the afternoon you will walk to the village of Hiriwaduna with its 2500 inhabitants and wander through the surrounding fields and forests. Experience the land and people, flora and fauna, wade through small streams, farmers may let you ride on ox carts or an outrigger boat. After approx. three hours drive to the hotel. 4th day: SIGIRIYA

Early morning departure to Minneriya National Park. There you will change into an ancient jeep for safari. Deerstalking journey on narrow ways into the park around not only birds and deer, but above all also the here freely living up to 50 animals strong elephant herds to track down. Afterwards the world famous "Sigiriya Rock" will be climbed. Along the rock face past the "Cloud Girls" - colorful murals of female beauties - up to the 200 m high plateau, where the remains of the fortress of King Kassapia built in the 5th century AD are to be hiked. Enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding hills and forests. Afterwards drive to the hotel. In the afternoon you will now reach the ancient royal city of Polonnaruwa dating back to the 12th century A.D. We will visit the archaeological park with countless remains of residential buildings, palace and park complexes as well as partially well-preserved stupas, temples and the four rock-carved Buddha statues of Gal Vihara, including the "sleeping Buddha". 5th day: SIGIRIYA - KANDY

(approx. 90 km, approx. 3 hours)

In the morning departure from the hotel to Kandy, capital of the last Sinhalese kingdom until 1815. On the way we will visit the charming spice garden of Matale, where there is also the possibility to buy local products in a small store. In the afternoon you will reach your hotel, followed by a visit to the "tooth temple" Sri Dalada Maligawa, which houses a tooth of Buddha hidden in a golden shrine. This place is still a pilgrimage site and monastery. If you are lucky, you can see the shrine during a ceremony, but never the tooth. In the evening visit of a performance of the Kandy -Dancers. 6th day: TREKKING IN THE KNUCKLES

(approx. 5 - 6 hours from/to Kandy)

Early in the morning start to the mountainous region of the "Knuckles Range" located east of Kandy. This area, also known as "Misty Mountains", is easy to hike. Often dense clouds of fog move through the mountains, the animals in the forest seem to mutate into ghosts, whose sounds you only hear mystically muffled as if out of nowhere. The path leads you through partly narrow tree growth tunnel-like up to a vantage point with a magnificent panoramic view of the lowlands. Some stamina is definitely required. After reaching the car again return to Kandy, in the afternoon stroll over the markets and through the merchant halls of the city center along the typical buildings from the colonial era and the winding alleys between the clock tower and the tooth temple, which is located directly on the "Kandy Lake". 7th day: KANDY - NUWARA ELIYA

(approx. 150 km, approx. 4 hours; partly winding mountain roads)

In the morning visit of the botanical garden of Peradeniya dating back to 1371 where u.Among other things flying foxes and probably the second largest tree in the world, a Javanese fig, which spans approx. 1600 square meters of ground. Afterwards drive to the tea plantations near Nuwara Eliya and visit a tea factory. Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya. (Meals: breakfast, dinner)

8th day: NUWARA ELIYA - HORTON PLAINS - BANDARAWELA (TRAIN)

The Horton Plains National Park is a World Heritage Site and offers the hiker an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna. At an altitude of up to 2500 m, the tour lasts approx. 5 - 6 hours and, due to its remote location, takes you to an area that has developed almost endemically for millions of years. Also most of the rivers of the island originate here in the highlands. An extraordinary natural experience for which you have risen quite early today. After lunch drive to Nanoya and train ride with the famous "Toy Train" in 2nd class to Ella. Once there, the driver will be waiting to take you to the hotel in Badarawela. 9th day: BANDARAWELA - UDAWALAWE

(approx. 85 km, approx. 3 hours without hiking)

This morning you will take an easy trekking tour to "Little Adams Peak" (1 - 1.5 hours), where you are supposed to be able to recognize a footprint of Buddha. This is a beautiful hike through the hilly nature of this area with a magnificent view from the peak at 1141 meters above sea level. You will walk through tea plantations, past waterfalls and perhaps improve your Sinhala with the farmers in the fields. Afterwards drive to the Udawalawe National Park. There you will experience a good three to four hour game drive safari through this magnificent wildlife sanctuary. With a little luck you will see crocodiles, elephants, deer, water buffalo and many birds. Overnight at Udawalawe National Park. (Meals: Breakfast)

10th day: UDAWALAWE - SINHARAJA

approx. 50 km, approx. 2.5 hours

After breakfast drive to Sinharaja Rainforest. An approx. four hour hike will take you into a hilly rainforest prayer. The local guide will mainly show you the diversity of plant life and countless small forest dwellers such as chameleons, insects, snails, snakes, birds etc. A very educational day that also offers time for your own excursions, as you will spend the night near the national park. 11th day: SINHARAJA - GALLE

(approx. 70 km, approx. 3 hours)

At noon you will reach Galle, the old Portuguese garrison town. In the 16th century Galle was the most important port city of the island until the British took over the regency in the 18th century. You will stroll through the old town with its many small stores and restaurants, drift through the market district and be impressed by the imposing Galle Fort. 12th day: GALLE - NEGOMBO
