Cap Karoso in Detail

Your Yoga & Wellness Resort

Located on the shores of a picturesque coral reef and surrounded by turquoise lagoons and traditional villages, Cap Karoso offers a luxurious base for exploring the Indonesian island of Sumba. Situated in the unexplored Kodi region in western Sumba, Cap Karoso is enveloped by miles of pristine beaches. Here, the life of the islanders follows the rhythm of sacred ceremonies and the wisdom of the Ratos, the local shamans. The hotel's architecture features spacious, contemporary buildings with nature-inspired, plant-covered roofs that harmoniously blend into Sumba's surroundings.

The resort is much more than just a place to rest – at Cap Karoso, ancient Sumbanese craftsmanship merges with contemporary art and modern design, narrating the island's impressive story. Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature, the rich culture, and other fascinating experiences. Enjoy sophisticated cuisine with fresh produce at the hotel's Beach Club and the unique gourmet cuisine at Julang. Relax on the beach, the cliffs, or in the yoga pavilion with daily yoga and meditation classes. Indulge in spa rituals with natural ingredients that elevate body and mind to deeper well-being.

Sustainability

Sumba, especially the coastal area where the resort is located, has a sensitive ecosystem consisting of farmland, forest, coastal areas, and coral reefs. Every detail of Cap Karoso has been carefully considered to protect this delicate environment. Measures already implemented include the careful selection of landscaping plants considering water consumption, the use of an eco-friendly water treatment system, and sourcing half of the energy from a local solar park. The resort also avoids plastic packaging and reduces food waste by utilizing its own livestock.

Agriculture

The once rocky land is now covered with lush, fertile organic gardens created through mulching, composting, and sustainable water management. The natural fertilizer from buffaloes, which play a significant role in Sumbanese culture, keeps the soil rich. These gardens allow for the cultivation of new culinary ingredients like lettuce leaves and tomatoes, previously unavailable on the island, with plants chosen to respect the local ecosystem and climate.

To give back to the local community, the farm offers a training program in landscaping and agriculture. Interested locals can learn about plant propagation, gardening skills, ecological farming and permaculture techniques, as well as basic health and safety in the garden. The aim is to teach local farmers new techniques that they can apply on their own land.

Location & Surroundings

Sumba, a gem in the Indonesian archipelago, impresses with its diverse nature: from hills to savannahs, dense forests, and spectacular coastlines. Particularly striking are the pristine beaches with crystal-clear water. Traditional villages with characteristic, up to 25 meters high, pointed roofs and megalithic tombs from the Bronze Age shape the island. These historical sites offer fascinating insights into ancient traditions. Sumba is an ideal destination for adventurers and culture enthusiasts eager to discover the authentic side of Indonesia. Off the beaten path, the island offers a unique opportunity to explore Indonesia's authentic side and collect unforgettable impressions.

Dining & Leisure

The heart of Cap Karoso is its organic farm. Spanning three hectares, it cultivates nearly all the fruits and vegetables used in the restaurant and bar. Cabbages, tomatoes, and mangoes are just a taste of what ripens right near your room.

Under the guidance of Chef Antoine LeVacon, enjoy exquisite dishes in the relaxed atmosphere of the Beach Club, prepared with fresh produce from the on-site farm. The focus here is on the shared dining experience. Try a perfectly grilled fish and savour handmade pasta passed around the table. It's all about rediscovering the joy of eating together and socialising. Guests can also dine in peace alone, fully enjoying the atmosphere and amenities of the resort.

The Julang restaurant uniquely combines the elegance of a gourmet restaurant with a convivial atmosphere. Regularly, you will be greeted by Michelin-starred chefs from France and other countries, who bring their culinary expertise for short stays. These guest chefs transform ingredients from the on-site organic farm into fresh, creative dishes that bear their unique signature. Each evening, Julang offers an intimate and exclusive dining experience at the chef's table, where you can experience the art of gastronomy up close.

Enjoy flawless drinks and delicious Indian-Basque finger food at the Apicine Bar, while taking in the expansive view of the horizon. With half board and full board, enjoy a 3-course dinner including non-alcoholic beverages (charcuterie, steak, lobster, alcoholic beverages not included). Full board additionally includes lunch.

Malala Spa

Immerse yourself in the mystical atmosphere of a traditional Sumbanese house and experience spa rituals based on ancient shamanic healing techniques. Here, exclusive signature rituals await you, featuring full-body massages, body scrubs, wraps, and luxurious baths. A standout is the Healing Ritual, inspired by the Marapu religion of Sumba, utilising botanical extracts such as turmeric, noni, and aromatic white sandalwood oil – a tribute to Sumba's natural treasures.

A variety of massages, often directly related to the unique flora of the island, invite relaxation. In addition to these nature-connected treatments, classic massages are also offered. Indulge in body scrubs, wraps, facial treatments, as well as hand and foot care, hair care, waxing, and comprehensive manicures and pedicures. Natural ingredients like hibiscus, island herbs, and sea salt unleash their soothing effects on your beauty.

Special parent-child treatments are available for families, involving even the youngest members and giving them unforgettable moments of comfort. Treat your body and mind to a deep journey into well-being. For sports enthusiasts, a modern gym is also available to enhance your vitality.

Yoga, Meditation & Mindfulness

Take time at the beach, on the cliffs, or in the yoga pavilion to align your body and mind. Yoga and meditation classes are offered twice daily (6 days a week, morning & afternoon), suitable for all levels. Absorb the restorative energy of Sumba to achieve a sense of freedom and tranquility. A hike here presents the perfect opportunity for a mindfulness session. Surround yourself with the island's quiet yet ever-changing landscape. Let the gentle ocean breeze awaken your senses and the power of nature strengthen your inner balance.
