Somatheeram Ayurvedic Health Resort in Detail

Your Ayurveda Resort

Perched on a tropical hillside along the picturesque Malabar Coast, with direct beach access and a stunning panoramic view of the Indian Ocean, the expansive resort (approximately 5 hectares) is nestled in a subtropical garden with over 200 Ayurvedic medicinal plants.

As India's first Ayurveda resort with Western standards, Somatheeram has been a pioneer in Ayurveda tourism since its inception in 1990. The Government of Kerala has awarded the NABH-certified Ayurveda Hospital the title of "Best Ayurvedic Centre" ten times. Under European-Indian management with a German-speaking owner and many long-standing employees, guests experience authentic Ayurveda in a familial atmosphere. Thanks to the manageable size, many guests receive personal attention and are often greeted by name after a short time.

Location & Surroundings

Kerala, the southern, tropical, evergreen, and fascinating state of India. It offers everything from palaces, traditional villages, nature reserves, and tea plantations to romantic boat rides through the Backwaters.

Dining & Leisure

Indulge in a culinary experience at our exceptional restaurant, styled in traditional Indian decor with a sun terrace and sea view. Enjoy dosha-specific, Ayurvedic vegetarian cuisine tailored to your treatment. Fresh fruits, freshly squeezed juices, and aromatic spices ensure light, digestible meals that enhance the detoxification success of your therapy. South Indian, European, and Chinese dishes are available for an additional charge. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served, with the option to order à la carte. In keeping with the therapeutic nature of the resort, no alcohol is served.

Ayurveda Center

At the Ayur Diamond-certified Ayurveda Center, around 15 experienced Ayurvedic doctors and about 70 therapists are dedicated to your well-being. More than 30 authentic treatments are tailored to your individual needs. An Ayurvedic doctor is available around the clock at the hotel.

A distinctive quality feature is the in-house manufacturing facility, where about 225 Ayurvedic medicines and preparations are produced according to GMP standards and are regularly controlled by the state. During a show production, guests gain fascinating insights into the manufacturing process.

The initial consultation takes place right on the day of arrival, followed by daily discussions with the Ayurvedic doctor about your treatment progress before the treatments begin. Treatments are scheduled either in the morning or afternoon, leaving you the rest of the day for relaxation or excursions. The specific treatments you receive are individually decided by the doctor - hence, even identical programs can vary daily.

Yoga and meditation sessions are held daily in two Yoga Shalas. Private sessions can be booked on-site upon request (approx. €28 (approx. UK £24 / USD $30) / 90 min.). Treatment areas for ladies and gentlemen are separate, with the highest hygiene standards naturally upheld.

Beach & Sea

The resort is situated directly above the beach, accessible via a somewhat steep staircase. Sun loungers, parasols, and a lifeguard are available at the public beach section. Due to occasionally strong currents, the beach is not suitable for a classic beach holiday; swimming may be restricted depending on the weather. In the winter months, the sea is generally much calmer.

Free Time

In the tropical garden, the outdoor pool invites you to relax. The open lounge, featuring a traditional tea cart, herb garden, books, and games, is a popular meeting spot-especially during rain, as the cottages often lack a covered terrace. Traditional dance and music events regularly take place on the open-air stage.

Depending on the length of stay, excursions are included: from 14 nights, a backwater tour awaits you, and from 21 or 28 nights, additional experiences are added. Numerous excursions such as elephant tours or visits to the crocodile park can also be booked on site.

The leisure offerings are complemented by complimentary activities such as tours of the in-house production facility, cooking classes, or insights into traditional Indian attire. Due to the limited number of participants, registration for many activities is recommended.

Getting There

Additional information

Good to Know

Hotel rooms at a glance

The resort features 70 cottages in a typical Indian style, located about 1 to 5 minutes' walk from the beach depending on their position. You can find a site map under "Helpful Documents".

The cottages are constructed from natural or brick stone. The Special cottages are more spacious, detached, and offer sea views, either directly or from the front terrace. The Deluxe cottages are bright, modern houses in prime locations, with bay windows and private sun loungers. The Kerala houses, up to 300 years old, have been meticulously restored and rebuilt, each a unique piece with 2 to 4 accommodation units. While the Kerala Standard is more compact, the roomier Kerala Deluxe features an additional, sometimes separate living area. The Sidhartha Deluxe Suite offers the utmost comfort with an open-air bath, separate living and bedroom, and a terrace with panoramic sea views.

All cottages are equipped with air conditioning, a fan, mosquito nets, and shutters without glass. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available at the reception.

The resort is situated on a slope and is interspersed with numerous stairs. Therefore, the location of the booked accommodation is at least as important as the category: Cottages located lower down offer more privacy and the most beautiful views. However, the restaurant, hospital, and treatment areas can only be reached by climbing stairs multiple times a day. The upper Standard and Special cottages are centrally located and ideal for those with limited mobility. However, they are somewhat livelier and less private. We recommend a consultation before booking for guests with limited mobility, to ensure the category and location meet individual needs.
