Sri Lanka Walks & Treks in Detail

Tour 5 nights / 6 days

Day 1: Airport - Negombo

(approx. 5.6 miles, 30 mins.)

Welcome at Colombo Airport by your driver/guide and transfer to your hotel in Negombo. In the afternoon, enjoy a roughly one-and-a-half-hour boat trip through the Muthurajawela Wetlands: The Dutch Canal takes you to the Negombo Lagoon, passing water monitors, crocodiles, monkeys, and numerous other birds and reptiles. (no meals provided)

Day 2: Negombo - Sigiriya

(approx. 96 miles, 3 hrs 45 mins.)

Travel to Sigiriya and in the afternoon, climb the Pidurangala Rock for sunset: A roughly 30- to 40-minute climb, partly steep over rocks, leads to one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the island - overlooking the Lion Rock Sigiriya and the surrounding jungle valleys (Difficulty: moderate). (Meals: Breakfast, Dinner)

Day 3: Sigiriya - Matale - Kandy

(approx. 56 miles, 3.5 hrs.)

After breakfast, continue to Kandy, en route hiking through the villages of Matale (Sudu-Ganga-Trek, approx. 2.5 - 3 hrs, Difficulty: easy): Traverse rubber plantations and observe latex tapping, stroll through a plantation workers' village and past gardens with cloves, pepper, and cocoa, enjoy an authentic Sri Lankan lunch with rice and curry at a family home, and cross the Sudu Ganga River on a wooden bridge, passing rice and vegetable fields. In the afternoon, explore Kandy on a walking tour (approx. 2.5 - 3 hrs) - a sustainable way to experience the city, its people, and culture up close: Walk to the Central Market past the historic Bogambara Prison, drive to the viewpoint at Upper Lake, and visit the Tooth Temple in time for the ceremony (6:30 p.m.), before a stroll around the picturesque Kandy Lake rounds off the evening. (Meals: Breakfast, Dinner)

Day 4: Kandy

After breakfast, hike the first leg of the Pekoe Trail (approx. 4 ½ hrs, Difficulty: easy to moderate; includes guide and meals en route; recommended: cap, sunscreen, and sturdy footwear). The trail starts at the historic Ceylon Tea Museum and winds through the tea plantations of Hanthana and small villages, offering panoramic views of Kandy, the Knuckles Mountain Range, and the surrounding mountains, before descending to Galaha. Return to the hotel. Optionally, a more challenging hike in the Knuckles Mountain Range is available for an additional charge (from USD 30 per person) (UNESCO World Heritage Site, Difficulty: moderate to challenging). (Meals: Breakfast, Dinner)

Day 5: Kandy - Nuwara Eliya

(approx. 50 miles, 3 hrs.)

After breakfast, continue to Nuwara Eliya. In the afternoon, hike to Single Tree Hill (approx. 1.5 - 2 hrs, Difficulty: easy to moderate), one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the region: The path leads through tea plantations and offers panoramic views of Gregory Lake and the surrounding mountains - depending on the weather with atmospheric afternoon mist. The evening is at your leisure, for example, for a restaurant visit or a classic afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel (payable directly on site). Nuwara Eliya is situated at an altitude of about 6,233 feet - warm clothing is recommended. (Meals: Breakfast for Standard & Deluxe category or Breakfast, Dinner for Superior category)

Day 6: Nuwara Eliya - South Coast (Departure)

Early in the morning (5:30 a.m.), hike in Horton Plains National Park (approx. 3.5 - 4 hrs, optional with lunch pack), a World Heritage Site at about 8,202 feet with unique highland vegetation and rare species such as the purple-faced langur, the slender loris, and the Ceylon leopard. Optionally, a more challenging, approximately 8.7-mile hike to the summit of Kirigalpoththa is available for an additional charge (approx. 4.5 - 5 hrs, Difficulty: moderate). Afterwards, transfer to the South Coast or to the airport for your departure.

Programme subject to change.
