The recently modernised Die Sonne Frankenberg hotel is nestled among historic half-timbered buildings in the heart of Frankenberg's old town, right on the marketplace. It blends tradition with modernity, nature and spa experiences, and gourmet cuisine, making it the perfect starting point for hiking or cycling trips, for instance, to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kellerwald National Park or the picturesque Edersee. Just a short walk away, the Thonet Museum and charming cafes invite you to linger.

The homeland of the Brothers Grimm has much to offer in terms of landscape: The Ederbergland region is perfect for exploration by car, bicycle, or on foot. The surroundings provide a variety of hiking routes to suit every level of ambition – whether through the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kellerwald, around the Edersee, or to the Hohenäcker quarry, the former brickworks. In the nearby area, there are also a wide range of leisure activities for both adults and children. From golf to sailing and diving, to the Waldecker mountain railway, Frankenberg offers a diverse travel experience. The city of Marburg is about 22 miles away, and Frankfurt is about 86 miles away.

The hotel's two restaurants showcase the culinary diversity of the region. The newly redesigned SonneStuben restaurant with its outdoor terrace offers an amazing taste experience in a relaxed atmosphere. Once a week (usually on Mondays), the hotel hosts a tapas evening (for a fee). Until 10:30 a.m., enjoy a diverse and rich breakfast buffet in the renovated breakfast room, featuring fresh regional products. Half board is served in the evening at the SonneStuben restaurant as a 3-course gourmet menu, including vegetarian options (other dietary requirements available on request, with prior notice). At the Gourmetrestaurant Philipp Soldan (open Thu.-Sun., for an additional charge, pay on site), which has been awarded a Michelin star and 17 points in the Gault Millau for the past 10 years, you can enjoy a nature-connected and creative cuisine - a combination of traditional products and modern dishes. The hotel predominantly uses regional ingredients, e.g., bread freshly baked daily from an organic bakery, eggs from an organic farm, and meat of organic quality from a local butcher. Fresh drinks can be enjoyed in the cosy Philippo Lounge (exclusive to hotel guests).

Discover pure relaxation at the recently modernised Boutique SonneSpa (ages 16+, Wed-Sun 9 a.m.-8 p.m., extended hours available on request and subject to availability) spread over approximately 1,000 sqm featuring a Finnish sauna (approx. 90°C), organic clay sauna (approx. 60°C), steam bath (approx. 45°C), plunge pool, ice fountain, wellness pool (approx. 33°C), hammam room, relaxation area with hanging loungers and water beds, as well as a small outdoor area. The rooftop terrace is the perfect spot to unwind in beautiful weather. Holistic natural therapies and spa treatments (Wed-Sun 9 a.m.-6 p.m.) delivered by trained pampering experts engage all senses and lead to complete relaxation. The massages, scrubs, baths, and wraps primarily use high-quality, natural products such as honey, oils, or herbs, predominantly featuring premium brands eponé and BIODROGA.

The small, modernly equipped gym (daily 5 a.m.-8 p.m.) offers ample opportunities for an energising workout.

The ideal location of the hotel invites you to enjoy extensive hiking and cycling tours in the surroundings of Frankenberg. On the edge of Frankenberg (about 1 mile from the hotel), there is a wildlife park where you can observe and feed wild animals such as deer, stags, and wild boars. Hiking backpacks, filled with culinary delights and optionally beer or wine along with an activity map with helpful tips, can be rented at the hotel for a fee (approx. €49/person). Additionally, the hotel offers e-bikes for rent (approx. €39/day, subject to availability). Hiking or biking maps are available on site. To explore North Hesse, the MeineCardPlus is also suitable. With this card, you can access up to 140 leisure activities including public transport.

Sonne Frankenberg collaborates with golf courses in the area. Upon request at SpaDreams or at the hotel, green fee discounts or similar can be offered.

Kellerwald

Located in North Hesse, the Kellerwald mountain range is home to one of the largest German beech forest areas and is renowned for the approximately 232 square miles large Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park - the only national park in Hesse. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011, it invites you with its vast beech forests, genuine primeval forest remnants, rocky slopes, and countless streams to hike, explore, and relax. Since April 2024, the hotel has been an official partner of the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park.
