Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel in Detail
Your Wellness Hotel
For over a century, the 5-star Grand Luxury Hotel, Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel, has been an integral part of Gran Canaria's history and stands as the archipelago's oldest hotel. Since 1890, it has hosted some of the most significant figures of the 20th and 21st centuries. In 2019, following its acquisition by the Barceló Group, the luxury hotel underwent extensive renovations and now shines with renewed splendour, yet retains its historic charm. Located in the prestigious Ciudad Jardín district, amidst the lush Doramas Park and close to Las Canteras Beach, its interior radiates inspiration in every corner. The original British style is enhanced by 19th-century artworks, murals, and paintings, complemented by elegant and welcoming decor. A lush garden landscape with Canary flora completes the enchanting atmosphere, creating the perfect setting for your luxurious retreat.
Dining & Leisure
The culinary offerings at the hotel delight with dishes that blend local traditions with international recipes, ranging from haute cuisine to Canarian dishes and signature cocktails served with the best sea view. The 'Poemas by Hermanos Padrón' is Michelin-starred and impresses with its local and cosmopolitan cuisine, distinguished by a preference for seafood. 'Muxgo' offers typical and environmentally friendly cuisine with many local products, and is awarded both a Michelin Star and a Green Michelin Star. Additionally, '1890 La Bodeguita' excites with its tapas dishes. Enjoy the breakfast buffet at 'Doramas' with its terrace, and the half board in the evening is served à la carte at 'La Bodeguita'. On Sundays, you can relish a Jazz Brunch on the terrace with live jazz music (approx. UK £48 / USD $59 per person, payable locally). The hotel also features 3 bars: 'Camarote Pool Bar' with delicious snacks and refreshing drinks, 'Alis Rooftop' on the hotel's rooftop terrace with an infinity pool and live music (Fri.-Sun.), and 'Bar Carabela' for book and music enthusiasts.

The Story of Santa Catalina
The history of Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel dates back to 1888 and 1890, when the first plan was designed by architect James M. MacLaren. After World War I, in 1923, the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Hall took over the building, which was reconstructed by architect Miguel Martín-Fernández de la Torre, preserving its distinctive English colonial style. However, it was not until 2019 that the hotel was revitalised with a complete renovation of its main spaces by the Barceló Group, and renamed to its current appearance. The building is part of the architectural and cultural heritage of the Canary Islands' capital and one of the most significant examples of the 20th-century regionalist architectural movement. Since its inception, Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel has been the Canary home to great cultural figures. It attracted actor Gregory Peck after filming Moby Dick, Maria Callas on her journey to the Canary Islands, and even Winston Churchill, who is said to have left the scent of his cigars in the hotel corridors. Today, it remains a cultural hub—besides hosting regular literary and artistic events, it annually holds the Santa Catalina Classics, one of Europe's most prestigious classical music festivals. The hotel received the Re Think Hotel Award for one of the best sustainability and hotel renovation projects in Spain.
