Diabetes
For the treatment of diabetes, conventional oral hypoglycemic drugs such as metformin and glimepiride are widely used but cannot prevent all complications of diabetes. Therefore, there is growing interest in exploring traditional medicinal plants as possible alternatives. The study focuses on BGR-34, a polyvalent antidiabetic drug developed by the Indian Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), which contains several herbs known for their antidiabetic properties. Aimil Pharmaceuticals (India) Ltd is the licensee for the manufacture and marketing of BGR-34 worldwide.
Preclinical studies in diabetic rats showed promising results with no adverse effects on vital organs. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the safety and clinical efficacy of BGR-34. This includes establishing safe dosage limits through toxicity studies in rats and evaluating its antidiabetic efficacy in Indian patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) for glycemic control.
The results of the safety study of BGR-34 in rats and the human clinical trial conducted suggest that BGR-34 is a very effective and safe drug for the treatment of NIDDM and can be widely used in clinical practice to reduce dependence on synthetic oral hypoglycemic drugs and thereby reduce their complications.
