The text deals with the therapeutic use of inhalations with thermal water for respiratory diseases, a long-established method with lasting effectiveness and no side effects. Nevertheless, the mechanisms of action have only been researched to a limited extent.
The article summarizes the effects of thermal water inhalation on various symptoms and characteristics of respiratory diseases , including allergy-like symptoms, inflammation, oxidant-antioxidant balance, cell influx, mucus secretion, recurrent infections, and lung and nasal function. A brief overview of the history of inhalation therapy is also given.
Based on the literature reviewed, thermal water inhalations have a positive effect on almost all respiratory diseases, probably by restoring the body's own defense mechanisms. They alleviate symptoms, improve the quality of life and serve as a useful additional therapy for respiratory diseases.
