Influenza-like illness (ILI) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with a high incidence in both adults and children. In India, influenza accounts for a significant proportion of hospitalizations for acute medical illness, especially during the peak rainy season. In this pilot study, AYUSH-64, a herbal medicine that has been used for 40 years for various clinical conditions, is being evaluated for its efficacy in the treatment of ILI. The study involved 38 subjects aged 18 to 65 years who received AYUSH-64 for one week and were followed for three weeks. The evaluation included improvement in ILI symptoms, frequency of acetaminophen and antihistamine use, hematologic, liver and renal function tests, occurrence of secondary complications and time to return to a normal daily routine. The results showed that a one-week intervention with AYUSH-64 helped to alleviate ILI symptoms and reduce the consumption of paracetamol and antihistamines. The hematological and biochemical parameters showed that the treatment was safe and no serious adverse effects occurred. The scientists concluded that AYUSH-64, when used alongside standard treatment, is safe and effective in the treatment of ILI. It can be considered as an add-on treatment for other viral infections with fever to achieve rapid recovery and better results.
